The BMW M3 made its public debut at the 1985 Frankfurt motor show and went on sale in 1986, so BMW is treating 2026 as the BMW M3 40th anniversary. Over six generations it has used a four-cylinder, two naturally aspirated inline-sixes, a V8 and two twin-turbo sixes. Each generation has its own fans, and each asks something different of its owner. Below is what BMW's own history says about each car, how BMW marked the year, and what each generation needs from an owner today.

How BMW is marking the BMW M3 40th anniversary

BMW's 40 years of the BMW M3 press kit, published on October 9, describes the original car's first official appearance at the IAA in Frankfurt in 1985 and a press launch at the Mugello circuit in spring 1986. BMW counts the anniversary from the 1986 market launch. BMW's Amelia Concours program in March was built around a six-generation display by BMW Classic USA, from E30 to G8x.

The rest of the year followed the same pattern:

  • Goodwood, July. Goodwood reported that one example from every M3 generation would run in a display on the hill.
  • Monterey Car Week, August. BMW's Monterey program listed an E30 M3, an E36 M3 Lightweight, an E46 M3, the E92 M3 Lime Rock Park proof-of-concept prototype, an F82 M4 GTS and the G80 M3 CS Handschalter for Legends of the Autobahn, plus four M3 race cars for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion.
  • Plant Munich, October. BMW M's one-millionth vehicle was an M3 in BMW Individual Fire Orange III. BMW also confirmed that Munich will build the first fully electric M3.

The enthusiast scene marked it too. Bimmer Invasion gave the M3 its own hall at Fairplex, as covered in our Bimmer Invasion Los Angeles recap.

Six generations at a glance

BMW quotes European ratings in its global press kit, and BMW USA quotes US-market figures. They differ, and the US-market E36 had an engine of its own. S14 comes from BMW's press kit and S55 and S58 from BMW USA. The E36, E46 and E9X engine codes come from the Wikipedia reference in our sources. A dash means we could not find a BMW-sourced US figure.

Generation Arrived (per BMW) Engine BMW's European rating BMW USA's US rating
E30 1986 market launch 2.3-liter four (S14) 195 hp with catalytic converter, 200 hp without —
E36 1992 3.0-liter six (S50), 3.2-liter from 1995 286 hp; 321 hp for the 3.2 240 hp, US-specific engine

US G80 figures are from BMW USA's 2025 M3 release.

E30: the homologation special that started it

BMW's account starts with chairman Eberhard von Kuenheim telling Paul Rosche of BMW Motorsport GmbH, "Mr. Rosche, we need a sporty engine for the BMW 3 Series." The car had to qualify for Group A touring car racing. According to the press kit, the rules required "at least 5,000 units" built "within the space of 12 consecutive months." The engine, developed under the name S14, was a 2.3-liter four with four valves per cylinder. Rosche said his team created it by cutting two combustion chambers off the head of the M88 six.

BMW quotes the road car at 195 hp with a catalytic converter and 200 hp without, at a weight of 1,200 kg. The racing version made up to 300 hp at 8,200 rpm. According to BMW, the M3 won the first World Touring Car Championship with Roberto Ravaglia in 1987, the DTM in 1987 and 1989, and the Nürburgring 24 Hours four times in a row from 1989 to 1992. BMW calls it "arguably the most successful touring car in motor sport history." By the end of 1991, 17,970 had been built, 786 of them convertibles.

E36: six cylinders, and a different car for America

The second generation, launched in 1992, was "a much more grown-up proposition," in BMW's words. In European form, its six-cylinder made 286 hp with VANOS variable valve timing. A 3.2-liter version with 321 hp followed in 1995. A sedan and a convertible joined the coupe, and the SMG automated manual gearbox became available from 1996. BMW says 71,242 were built in Regensburg between 1992 and 1999.

US buyers got less power. The press kit explains that, to be certain of meeting US exhaust emission laws, BMW used a 525i engine enlarged to three liters. BMW USA notes that the E36 was the only M3 generation with an engine unique to the US market, which it puts at 240 hp. BMW USA adds that the E36 made Car and Driver's 10Best list every year it was in production.

E46: the high-revving six

The E46 arrived in 2000 with a 3.2-liter inline-six that BMW rates at 343 hp at 7,900 rpm in European form. BMW USA quotes 333 hp for US cars, with a 6-speed manual or the SMG II gearbox. In 2003 came the M3 CSL, which BMW says was more than 110 kg lighter at 1,385 kg and made 360 hp.

BMW USA's Amelia release says the E46 "is today revered as one of the all-time best handling cars." The catch is age. Even the youngest cars are now around twenty years old, and their known weak points need attention before upgrades. Our E46 M3 upgrade guide covers the reliability work first.

E9X: the only V8 M3

BMW USA calls the E9X "the only road-going M3 to be powered by a V8 engine." The 4.0-liter V8 makes 420 hp in European form and 414 hp in US form, with an 8,300 rpm redline according to BMW USA. BMW says the engine weighed 202 kg, less than the six-cylinder it replaced. The car was offered as a coupe, sedan and convertible, and a dual-clutch transmission became available in 2008. Limited editions included the 4.4-liter GTS, the 67-unit CRT and, for the US only, 200 Lime Rock Park Editions. Production ended in 2013.

The S65's character comes with a well-documented maintenance conversation. Our S65 rod bearing and ownership guide explains it.

F80: turbocharging, and the M3 name goes sedan-only

The fifth generation debuted at the Detroit auto show in January 2014. Coupes and convertibles became the M4, and the M3 name stayed with the sedan. A twin-turbo 3.0-liter six replaced the V8. BMW rates it at 431 hp and 550 Nm in European form. BMW USA quotes 425 hp and 406 lb-ft for US cars. BMW also says fuel consumption and emissions were about 25 percent lower than the previous model. A Competition Package brought 450 hp from 2016, and the 2017 M3 CS made 460 hp. In 2016, the 30 Jahre Edition marked thirty years of the M3 with 500 cars in Macao Blue.

How the F80 compares with its successor for tuning and ownership is a long conversation of its own. Our F80 vs. G80 comparison covers it.

G80: xDrive, a Touring, and a manual send-off

The sixth generation premiered in September 2020. BMW added M xDrive all-wheel drive in 2021 and the M3 Touring in 2022, and the limited-run M3 CS followed in early 2023. For North America, the 2027 M3 CS Handschalter is BMW's send-off for the generation. It is the only M3 CS with a 6-speed manual, with rear-wheel drive and 473 hp. BMW says it weighs nearly 75 lb less than a standard M3 when fitted with the optional carbon-ceramic brakes. It starts at $107,100 plus $1,350 destination, and its two BMW Individual colors, Imola Red and Techno Violet, are "drawn from 40 years of M3 history."

The G80 now has a known end date. In May, BMWBLOG reported that BMW M North America product manager Scott Stirling, speaking about the 2027 car, said "this is the last model year of G80." The outlet later updated the story to say production would run into late summer 2027, with the next gasoline M3, the G84, arriving in summer 2028. If you own one, our G80 M3 and G82 M4 upgrade guide covers what to do first.

What each generation asks of an owner today

Each generation's appeal comes from a different place. So does the work it needs.

  • E30: A collector car now. Originality, documentation and careful preservation matter more than modification.
  • E36: Know whether you're looking at a US-market or European car. BMW built them with different engines.
  • E46: Do the age-related reliability work before spending on performance.
  • E9X: Budget for the V8's preventive maintenance, and treat service history as part of the car's value.
  • F80: A turbo six that many owners modify. That makes evidence of how earlier owners modified and maintained the car especially important.
  • G80: A finite, well-supported platform. We'd usually start with tires, alignment and OEM+ changes that are easy to undo.

The common thread is that an M3's history matters as much as its specification. Before buying any of them, have it inspected by someone who knows that generation. Our guide to a BMW M pre-purchase inspection explains what a good one covers. We also offer pre-purchase inspections that include a diagnostic scan and a written summary of findings. If you already own one, every project starts with a conversation and an in-person look at the car, whether it needs repair and service or a planned upgrade.
